Interview with Joanna O'Brien

"I feel there is no such thing as a typical career path for a child care worker."

Has someone told you that they think you should work in child care, but you’re unsure? Perhaps you have little or no experience in the industry but feel you can really make a difference? The truth is, if you believe you have something to offer, you can and should make the steps to making care a big part of your life.

The child care industry is always looking for talented and passionate professionals who see duty of care as a calling, not an occupation. You can use your skills and life experiences to benefit others, enhance your own parenting skills, knowledge and help young people to reach their potential.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics states that there are 1.5 million Australian children aged 12 and under that currently have regular child care arrangements and around 750 000 of those children attend formal child care. That’s a big market, and with the population growing year upon year – your passion and skills will help drive care practices forward.

Joanna O'Brien identified child care as a joyful and fulfilling career choice 17 years ago, one where hard work was recognised not by a balance sheet but by how many smiling faces she had at the end of the day. Having established Platinum Pre School, she confirmed that caring and supporting the development of a child was the path she wanted to tread. Now she has an extended family that reaches far beyond her own. It’s something she is very happy about.

Don’t put your life on hold. Make the steps you want to take and look forward to a more fulfilling role within your community.

5 years of Platinum

11402718 858188844228541 2137396198327553925 n-1It's hard to believe it's been 5 years since we opened the doors of our first campus in Randwick in 2010. Being primary school teachers, and looking for suitable pre schools for their own daughters, Jo and Nichola (our Directors) saw a desperate need in the Sydney area for pre schools with a strong focus on education and school readiness. With a clear understanding of the social, emotional and academic skills that children need to successfully transition into the primary school world, Jo and Nichola set out to create a pre school that balances these skills and helps them to develop a love of learning and a sense of community in these formative years.

It took nearly 3 years of planning, designing and 'hoop jumping' to get the Randwick campus open. Nichola & Jo used to drive into what is now our playground have staff meetings in the green carpeted main hall which is now the heart of the pre school. Slowly accumulating resources and carefully envisaging how the centre would look they lay the foundations for what would end up being one of Sydney's most well respected and highly sought after early education institutions.

1545564 858188537561905 4313958756501119186 nIt was a bit of a bumpy road though. Delays in approvals and construction meant that everyone had to roll up their sleeves and help out. Robert and Nick (their husbands) worked on certain aspects of the centre's construction, putting in many extra hours to get everything completed, whist Jo's parents typed up and hand delivered enrolment forms to local families. Jo and Nichola, in the meantime, set up an office at home and cared for the children of 4 families who were so desperate that they couldn't wait for the centre to get its final approvals. Then finally the stars aligned in June of 2010 and we managed to open!... Albeit with only 13 enrolled students.

Since that first day we have grown to include an additional campus in Prestons with one in the pipeline for Clovelly. Employing more than 30 staff our campuses are full to capacity with waiting lists at both. We've won countless awards, lectured at universities and written for various early education publications. We have become an integral part of the community and amongst supporting other community initiatives we have raised over $100,000 for Ronald McDonald House Randwick.

Today we celebrate the day that the Platinum dream became a reality and thank from the bottom of our hearts everyone who has supported us over the years. Hears to the next 5!

Helping Hands

Today four of our students were lucky enough to leave their mark on a Hyundai i30 in an excursion down to Ronald McDonald House, Randwick. The children, along with Jo, Nichola, Emily and Alex all got to leave their hand prints on the car before it sets off on a road trip around Australia.

The Helping Hands Road Trip is a celebration of the 4,334 'helping hands' of staff and volunteers who make RMH Houses a home away from home for 6,500 families every year. With the additional support of Hyundai Help for Kids - an initiative of Hyundai and Hyundai Dealers in Australia, the car will hit the road, visiting Houses across Australia, to create awareness and raise much needed funds.

Not only did the kids get to paint a car, but they also met some aussie animals from Sydney Wildlife and had a yummy sausage sizzle. If you ask us, that's an excursion to remember!

If you would like to support this adventure make sure to buy tickets in their raffle to win a Hyundai i30 by clicking below:
